Motion: "This House believes that architecture is defined by the life lived inside, rather than what happens from the outside."

Who is architecture really for? The Proposition argues that a building's worth is measured from within: how it shapes the comfort, well-being and daily habits of the people who live in it. The Opposition argues that architecture is a public art that shapes streetscapes, civic identity and community life, and can't turn its back on the outside world.

An architectural debate in a modified parliamentary format, where teams put their reasoning, architectural knowledge and ability to argue under pressure to the test. Each college team has two members and splits in advance: one member prepares for the Proposition, the other for the Opposition. Speaking positions are drawn by lot on arrival and speeches alternate between the sides, followed by an open floor for rebuttals and cross-questioning.

Rules

  • Arguments must stay relevant to the motion and be backed by sound reasoning, examples or evidence.
  • Rebuttals and cross-questioning happen only in the open-floor round.
  • Challenge arguments, not individuals. Personal attacks, discriminatory remarks or disrespectful conduct are not permitted.
  • Architectural examples, case studies, research and historical references may be used.
  • Stick to the allotted speaking time and keep to proper debate etiquette.
  • The Moderator's decision on time, conduct and procedure is final.
  • Judged on argument, reasoning, evidence, rebuttal, relevance, originality, delivery and time management.
  • Serious misconduct, disruption or breaking the rules may lead to disqualification.
  • The 2nd prize depends on the number of registrations.
